11.24.09 | When May I Consolidate my Federal Loans?

Posted in Consolidation, Student Loans by Kristin Morris

For both FFEL and Direct Loans you can consolidate:

  • During your grace period.
  • Once you’ve entered repayment (the day after the end of the six-month grace period).
  • During periods of deferment or forbearance.

Consolidating federal loans can only be done once. Now is a pretty good time to consolidate because interest rates are at historic lows. Once you get a new interest rate it is locked in for the life of the loan.

One of our sons has graduated and we’re left with a mountain of debt with Nelnet (5 loans including 2 Stafford) and through Firstmark leaving us with a $50K + debt. Is there anyway we can consolidate all of these with you and knock the interest rate down? Thank you, Bob Stewart
