If you have loans and are looking to minimize your debt, learning how to budget your loan money is important, but it is also important to get the best education possible with the money you have. To prepare yourself for success, don’t skimp on the important stuff like buying textbooks!

College textbooks are a big expense, on average college textbooks cost students up to a thousand dollars a year! While you can opt to share a text that is listed as “supplemental” or “optional,” a required texts is a reference you will refer to throughout a semester. For many, sharing textbooks or surviving without the required textbook is a reality, but it is not a desirable option. You cannot get the most out of your education dollar if you are falling behind in class because you are relying on a library copy or a friend to get reading assignments done.

Buying a used text book then selling it back, or renting – yes renting a textbook – can give you the extra cash you need to pay off an interest payment or to reduce the amount you need to pay for text books the next semester, and will set up you for success. I have never rented a school book. The reason being, if the book is directed at my major, I keep it for my library. if it is english, history, general ed stuff, I would rent.
