02.09.10 | 3 Reasons Why Going Back to School is a Great Idea

It’s 2010, and the world is on the recovery from what many economists call the worst recession since the Great Depression in the 1930s. We get a lot of questions along the lines of “Should I go back to school?”, “Are banks still lending like they used to?”, “are online degrees as good as traditional ones?”… so we decided to take a look at why it is always a good idea to reinvest in your education.

1. More skills = more marketabilitySalary by Education Level

One of the fundamental reasons for going to school (or back to school) is to broaden your range of abilities and gain more knowledge to be useful and current in the workplace. Simply put, the more diverse and interesting (but relevant) classes you take, the more perspectives you gain to solve problems and convert them into opportunities. An employer will definitely look more favorably on a candidate with a varied and interesting academic background, and it could even be the difference between a hire or pass if you are equally matched with someone else.

2. More education = higher salary

Countless studies have shown that on the aggregate, those who take the time to go to school and earn degrees in their chosen fields almost always will earn more over their lifetime than those who do not. Not to mention the fact that according to the US Department of Labor Statistics, the higher your education level, the lower your chance of unemployment; this translates into more earnings, less stress, and better overall quality of life.

3. There are plenty of ways to fund your educational investment

From Federal Stafford loans to alternative student loans, to scholarship sources like ScholarshipPoints and Student Scholarship Search, there are a huge amount of resources to pay for school.

When it comes right down to it, spending the money and going to school makes a whole lot of sense in the long run. Plus, you’re sure to meet and network with lots of people and maybe even make some great friends in the process. Win-win.

There's no guarantee, but employers are definitely more willing to pay more for a highly educated person with experience than someone without the degrees and knowledge.

Education is something you definitely should consider throughout your entire life. There will *always* be a new skill to learn, or technology to get used to that helps you work more efficiently or better.

Yes being that were in a economic depression the people that dont have job or that never really had a good job and lost it could better themselves while there not working. So when the job market does get better they can have a better job or be more likely to recieve the job postition because they have education and knowlegde about the job, opposed to someone who doesn't.

The average college student has to get into debt in order to qualify for student loans from Sally Mae and FAFSA. The students do not understand how or why these student loans institutions (Sally Mae, Inc and FAFSA) require four years of credit history to be accepted for a student loan. Apparently College students have to be in debt with credit cards or bank loans starting in the ninth grade through the twelfth grade in high school as a requirement to qualify for these loans. The College students do not understand why these lending institutions are using commercial loan criteria for students who desire to continue their education directly from high school. It was not the colleges students intention, desire or understanding that they have to be debt for four years starting in the ninth grade to obtain a student loan after high school graduation. The college student assumes the Federal Government is funding these loan institutions and question why high school students must get into debt in high school to qualify for these student loans esspecially in these hard econonic times. Education is important in order to get a decent job but the interest rate is high for students and should be lowered by the banks. That way the students can pay off their debt off more earlier and their interest will not pile up. Going back to college is not really about receiving more education for higher pay but instead the economy needs people who are well educated in order to come up with the ideas to help the nation get out of debt it is currently in. That way everyone who is in need of a job will get one. Everyone has to help each other in this crisis and not one person should want to take college just to get a pay rise. This type of greed is what’s leading the nation into more debt. Besides if you did get more education where is the job? Almost one of ten Americans are out of jobs. We as a nation need education to come up with a solution to help everyone get a job so they can pay off their debt and keep their house over their head along with getting the basics to keep us going.

When I look at those I know, a lot of these people do not have much of a college background, or no background at all. For some reason, these people are doing just fine. No, they do not make a ton of money, but they make do. Although there are people I know that have never gone to college and are pretty well off, I still feel college is beneficial to anyone no matter what. College is a wonderful experience I feel everyone should get the chance to have. Personally, I love college. I love the people I have met, the teachers I have had, and the campus itself. College gives people an idea of what it is like to be independent. You are pretty much free to do what you want, and that freedom comes with responsibility. I love that feeling. You also meet people that will end up being your best friends for the rest of you life. Yes, college brings benefits, such as higher salaries and more skills to work with. College is more than a high salary. College is a life-changing experience, and a chance to say, “I went and discovered ____!” Whether a person feels they love college or not, there is no way to know until you go and experience it for yourself.

I have many debates with people about why I feel like me going to school right now is the right thing to do. When these people say how easy it is because they have a very good paying job that required no schooling, I just tell myself that if something happens down the road (which has been happening a lot lately) and he/she gets laid off or the place shuts down, they will be lost in the world with nothing but experience in something that has probably changed a lot since they started anyways. And those of us who have been working so hard and struggling through school will be secure in the job we love!

You never know with the economy the way that it is if you will have to help your husband out and get a job. If you don’t have a college education it is extremely hard to find a job.
