06.30.08 | FAFSA Requirement: Selective Service
If you’re a male over the age of 18, you are required by law to register with the Selective Service, also known as the draft. While America has not invoked the draft since the Vietnam War, federal still mandates it, and your FAFSA will be rejected if you meet the eligibility guidelines for the draft but are not registered.

One thing to remember for those student who are beyond the age to register:
1) For permanent residents who did not register but arrived and stayed in the US before they were 26, regardless of whether they were here illegally or before they received the green card, they were required to register. If they did not they would need to send for a “Status Information Letter” from Select Service. They would need to take this letter and a statement as to why they did not register to the Financial Aid Office at the school they will attend for the school to determine their eligibility for Title IV aid.

2)US Citiizens who did not register and are beyond the age to register will need to go through the same process as above.
The “Status Information letter” is required in both cases. It can take up to 6 weeks to get a response back so completing this soon will help avoid delays.
Once the institution has approved a student for one year and has the proper documentation there should be no need to reaccomplish this each year if staying at the same institution.
